IF Black Caviar's win in the TJ Smith Stakes last Saturday is our lasting memory of her, trainer Peter Moody and her group of owners could not have chosen a grander stage.
Before a packed Royal Randwick, the racecourse's new grandstand providing a magnificent backdrop, and against one of the best fields of sprinters she has faced during her career, Black Caviar was at her supreme best.
She raced away to another easy win, three lengths this time, collecting two more Australian records in the process - her tally of 15 Group 1 wins eclipsed the previous record set by Kingston Town, and her eighth Group 1 win in succession broke Bernborough's benchmark established nearly 70 years ago.elated Coverage
Black Caviar's name nestles comfortably in the pantheon of all-time greats like Phar Lap, Kingston Town, Bernborough, Tulloch, Carbine, Rising Fast, Might And Power and Makybe Diva.
But Black Caviar did something none of those legends could achieve - she retires unbeaten. Undefeated champions are a rare jewel in racing and only one thoroughbred in world racing boasts a superior record - but you need to go back nearly 150 years to find that horse, Hungarian mare Kincsem, winner of 54 starts.
The Australian wonder mare certainly had nothing left to prove on the racetrack. Moody and her owners were not chasing the dollars, it was never about the money, but they wanted to secure Black Caviar's place in racing history by preserving her famous unbeaten winning streak and not sending her to the races one time too many.It happened to America's champion mare Zenyatta, who lost her final race after winning her first 19 races. It won't happen to Black Caviar.
Black Caviar is a rising seven-year-old mare and for every race win, she was moving closer to a potential loss. That she retained her phenomenal speed and power over four years of racing at the highest level despite suffering some potentially career-ending injuries is testament to Moody's management of the mare, and her own desperate will to win. This was never more evident than the day Black Caviar conquered the world at England's famous Royal Ascot carnival last June.I have been privileged to watch Black Caviar race many times but I rank her English victory as perhaps the greatest of her 25 wins.Black Caviar wasn't at her best that day but she was still able to beat the Northern Hemisphere's best sprinters. She was going to win comfortably by more than a length when Luke Nolen misjudged the winning post and began easing down on the great mare. They were nearly caught by France's Moonlight Cloud. For a few strides, a whole nation held its breath before Nolen realised his error, shook the reins at Black Caviar in the final three strides and she held on to score a narrow win.It wasn't until after the race that we learned how Black Caviar managed to conjure a win under duress. She has suffered some severe leg and back muscle injuries that would have prevented any other horse from stretching out fully - but not this equine phenomenon. As always, Black Caviar found a way to win.
As a sports tragic, I still feel that Black Caviar's effort at Royal Ascot is one of the great Australian sporting moments, right up there with Australia II's America's Cup win in 1982, Cadel Evans' win in the 2011 Tour de France, Don Bradman's 99.94 Test batting average, tennis great Rod Laver's dual Grand Slam wins in 1962 and 1969, Shane Warne's ball of the century to Mike Gatting in the 1993 Ashes series, Cathy Freeman's 400m gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Makybe Diva's third Melbourne Cup in 2005, swimming legend Dawn Fraser's hat-trick of Olympic 100m gold medals, and Phar Lap's 1932 win in the Agua Caliente Handicap.
And like all those champions, Black Caviar transcended her sport, bringing a whole new audience to watch her race.

Dummy Foals – a problem sometimes faced in the breeding season.
“Dummy” foals or, in vet terms, there are a few forms. Neonatal maladjustment syndrome, perinatal asphyxia syndrome and most commonly hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).
All describe newborn foals that have behavioural or neurologic abnormalities that do not have an infectious, toxic, congenital or metabolic cause.
The condition results from decreased blood and oxygen supply to the brain.
Signs
Some foals begin showing signs immediately after birth while others may not show any signs for a couple of days.
Most common signs are an inability or disinterest in sucking, uncoordinated by comparison, floppiness and appearing pretty well 'dumb' to their instincts.
Diagnosis
Generally dummy foal diagnosis is based on clinical signs (just mentioned), history and eliminating other potential causes.
Get your vet to evaluate and rule out any other sinister causes.
Treatment
The amount and level of treatment depends on the severity of the foal’s “Dummy-ness”.
In mild cases, very little treatment may be necessary. If the foal fails to absorb adequate colostrums (first milk from the mare) and is a suspected dummy, plasma will be given.
If the foal is unable to nurse, feeding through a tube or supplementation given intravenously may be needed.
In severe cases, more aggressive therapy is required. Seizure activity needs to be controlled. Medications. In severe cases a vet should be on site for the foals welfare.
Again, consult experienced Horse vets.
Prognosis
The prognosis for survival is dependent of the amount of cellular damage the foal has suffered.
The severity will dictate time and success of recovery along with quick action and observation of the foal’s problems after birth.
Like all problems with babies, the quicker you observe and apply appropriate quality treatment the better the chances of recovery.
Recovery is often without long term damage.

The Giggle
A jockey was riding the favourite at a race meeting, and was well ahead of the field.
His horse rounded the final corner, when suddenly the jockey was hit on the head by a turkey and a string of sausages.
He managed to keep control of his mount and pulled back into the lead, only to be struck by a box of Christmas crackers and a dozen mince pies as he went over the last fence.
With great skill he managed to steer the horse to the front of the field once more when, on the run in, he was struck on the head by a bottle of sherry and a Christmas pudding. Thus distracted, he succeeded in coming only second.
He immediately went to the race stewards to complain that he had been seriously hampered...

The 2012 Inglis Classic Sale unveiled the first Australian yearlings by crack sprinter READY’S IMAGE (USA) and the hype was well justified; the stallion ending the sale as the leading first season sire (by median and average).
Astute judges paid up to US$150,000 for the first Northern Hemisphere bred Ready’s Image yearlings last season and the results from the stallion’s first Southern Hemisphere crop could not have been more impressive.
Top priced yearling was the magnificent colt out of Topsinga (consigned by Lincoln Farm) that made $100,000 to the bid of renowned pinhookers BC3 Thoroughbreds. BC3 also secured the first foal – a colt - out of Bye Bye Tata consigned by Kitchwin Hills for $52,500.
"The Topsinga colt spent more time out of his box than in it when he got to Sydney," reported said Lincoln Farm proprietor Nick Posa. "We have always had a huge rap on the horse so we were glad the market agreed with us!"
Another colt – a half brother to stakes placed Yaqubi out of the Gr 2 Western Australian Oaks winner MYSTIC CHANTRY - brought a final bid of $65,000 to Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock whilst Bendaree Park at Appin sold the colt out of Daloot to Rapture Farm for $57,500.
"The market responded favourably to good looking horses by the stallion in a tough selling environment," said Posa. "The stallion throws to type and across the board in 2010 we saw good legged, strong bodied, athletic and forward foals and this translated into sales ready yearlings this year."
"Breeding can be a very tough game for many participants and it is just so great to see this stallion’s supporters so well rewarded for their belief in the horse." The son of Champion Australian Sire More Than Ready, Ready’s Image ensured breeders pocketed many multiples of the 2009 service fee ($11,000) with the 5 yearlings sold this week averaging $60,500 (median $57,500).
"It is not just the good sale results we are delighted about," continued Posa. "The yearlings have gone to some of the best homes possible and will get every chance. When a stallion has a small crop representing him this is essential."
Ready’s Image stands at Lincoln Farm at Blandford, NSW for the Southern Hemisphere breeding season. He resides at Walmac Farm in America for the Northern Hemisphere season.
The stallion’s oldest progeny are 2YO’s of the current USA season and are widely expected to be well represented at breeze up sales in the next few months.

Crystal Lily has died during trackwork at Flemington. The outstanding mare won the world's richest race for two-year-olds, the $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes,in 2010. She suffered a suspected heart attack during a jump-out on the track.
From the ABC interview with Simon Zahara, co Trainer - "She's part of the family for most people here, she gave everyone a great thrill in racing," he told the ABC.
"From the strapper to the owners to the staff, everyone's devastated and they become your world.
"She was probably halfway through the trial and started to drop out suddenly and then collapsed to the ground."Zahra said there were no indications that the mare had any health problems.
"She's never had any issues in her whole life, from day one," he said.
A sad day in Racing.

French horse Americian took out the 150th Melbourne Cup with Maluckyday 2nd and So You Think 3rd.
The heavily backed So You Think started as one of the shortest price favourites in history but the Bart Cummings trained horse looked to win the race. He seemed to labour in the last 100m of the race, some are saying that the jockey may have been at fault letting the big stallion race too early. Americain ran a very smart race on a track that suited the European to a tea and he closed in on the leaders in the last 100m to easily win by 2-3 lengths.
